28 вересня по 1 жовтня 2023 року у Відні (Австрія) відбувся 23-й Всесвітній конгрес Світової асоціації психіатрії (23rd WPA World Congress of Psychiatry). Надихаюча наукова програма з численними сесіями та лекціями, які висвітлили найважливіші питання психіатрії та психічного здоров’я, об’єднали більш ніж 4000 учасників із 117 країн.
Цьогоріч до Всесвітнього конгресу з психіатрії було залучено студентів-медиків з метою популяризації психіатрії як галузі, мотивації обрання даної спеціальності для подальшої кар’єри та зменшення стигматизації професії. У конгресі взяла участь староста СНГ кафедри психіатрії, наркології та медичної психології, студентка 3 курсу медичного № 1 факультету Поліна Ширай, яка отримала грант на участь за представлену наукову доповідь, виконану під керівництвом професора Андрія Скрипнікова та доцента Дмитра Бойка, на 7-у науково-дослідницькому курсі Української психіатричної асоціації, що відбувся на початку вересня у Польщі.
«Це були 4 неймовірно насичених дні, наповнених психіатрією в усіх можливих контекстах. Тут були і навчальні курси, і наукові доповіді, і безмежний простір для спілкування з фахівцями світового рівня не лише з психіатрії, а й рівноміжних наук, таких, як психологія та нейронауки», - розповідає Поліна.
У межах конгресу було проведено програму для студентів медиків з відпрацювання навичок клінічного інтерв’ю «Аrtistic exercise: power of observation», під час якої Поліні Ширай випала нагода працювати в команді особисто з президентом Світової асоціації психіатрії, професором Афзалом Джаведом. Під час сесії Поліна також мала нагоду особисто поспілкуватися з професором Мухамедом Вакаром Азімом та Говардом Лі, членами робочої групи по студентам-медикам Світової асоціації психіатрії.
Насичена програма конгресу включала багато симпозиумів, під час яких учасники мали змогу обговорити нагальні питання в галузі, оскільки психіатрія та психічне здоров’я зазнають швидких змін в нинішніх умовах. Сьогодні існує підвищений інтерес до реабілітації та психосоціальних втручань, зокрема, й внаслідок продовження російсько-Української війни, яка призвела до значного погіршення психічного здоров’я не лише українців, а й громадян інших держав.
Не менш захоплюючою була зустріч із «живою легендою» Норманом Сарторіусом, колишнім директором Відділу психічного здоров'я Всесвітньої організації охорони здоров'я та колишнім президентом Всесвітньої психіатричної асоціації, під час симпозіуму «Докази прогресу відновлення та антистигми». Під час заходу розглядався новий підхід у галузі психічного здоров’я, який стратегічно спрямований на молодь, медичних працівників, робочі місця та засоби масової інформації. Зазначалося, що сьогодні можна спостерігати значний прогрес в галузі, не- зважаючи на труднощі у боротьбі зі стигматизацією та сприянні одужанню від психічних захворювань.
До слова, психічне здоров’я є необхідною умовою для фізичного здоров’я та відіграє ключову роль у зусиллях, спрямованих на досягнення соціальної інтеграції та справедливості, загального охоплення медичними послугами, доступу до правосуддя та прав людини, а також сталого економічного розвитку.
PSMU student at the 23rd World Congress of the World Psychiatric Association
From September 28 to October 1, 2023, the 23rd WPA World Congress of Psychiatry took place in Vienna, Austria. The event featured an inspiring scientific program with numerous sessions and lectures addressing the most crucial issues in psychiatry and mental health. It brought together over 4,000 participants from 117 countries.
This year, medical students were involved in the World Congress of Psychiatry with the goal of popularizing psychiatry as a field, motivating students to choose this specialty for their future careers and reducing the stigma associated with the profession. Polina Shyrai, the course leader of the SSG at the Department of Psychiatry, Narcology and Medical Psychology, a third-year student of Medical Faculty No. 1, participated in the congress. She received a grant to participate for her presented research report, conducted under the supervision of Professor Andriy Skrypnikov and Associate Professor Dmytro Boyko, during the 7th Research Course of the Ukrainian Psychiatric Association, which took place in early September in Poland.
"These were four incredibly rich days, filled with psychiatry in all possible contexts. There were educational courses, research presentations, and boundless opportunities to interact with world-class experts not only in psychiatry, but also in related fields such as psychology and neuroscience," Polina recounts.
As part of the congress, a program was organized for medical students to practice clinical interview skills called “Artistic exercise: power of observation.” During this session, Polina Shyrai had the opportunity to work closely with Professor Afzal Javed, the President of the World Psychiatric Association. Additionally, during the session, Polina had the chance to personally converse with Professor Muhammed W. Azim and Howard Liu, members of the working group for medical student education of the World Psychiatric Association.
The congress had a packed agenda, featuring numerous symposia where participants had the opportunity to discuss pressing issues in the field. This is especially crucial as psychiatry and mental health are undergoing rapid changes in the current environment. There is currently a heightened interest in rehabilitation and psychosocial interventions, particularly due to the ongoing russia’s war in Ukrain, which has led to a significant deterioration in mental health not only for Ukrainians but also for citizens of other nations.
Equally captivating was the meeting with the “living legend” Norman Sartorius, former Director of the Mental Health Department of the World Health Organization and former President of the World Psychiatric Association, during the symposium “Evidence of Progress in Recovery and Anti-stigma.” The event discussed a new approach to mental health strategically aimed at youth, healthcare professionals, workplaces and the media. It was noted that significant progress is being observed in the field today, despite the challenges in combating stigma and promoting recovery from mental illnesses.
Ad notam. Mental health is a necessary condition for physical health and plays a key role in efforts aimed at achieving social integration and justice, universal access to healthcare, access to justice and human rights, as well as sustainable economic development.
