Пів століття тому вони переступили поріг Полтавського медичного стоматологічного інституту як студенти, щоб опанувати професію, яка стала справою їхнього життя. За ці роки змінилася країна, медицина, технології та підходи до лікування. Україна пережила чимало випробувань, а сьогодні медична спільнота працює в умовах повномасштабної війни. Водночас незмінним залишилося головне – відповідальність лікаря перед людиною і зв’язок із рідною альма-матер.
1 серпня 2026 року у Полтавському державному медичному університеті зустрілися випускники лікувального факультету Полтавського медичного стоматологічного інституту (ПМСІ), які завершили навчання у 1982 році. Подія була присвячена 50-річчю від початку їхнього студентського шляху – відтоді, як вони вперше переступили поріг інституту.
До університету прибув 61 випускник із різних куточків України. Найбільше учасників було з Полтавщини – з Полтави, Кременчука, Миргорода, Лубен, Горішніх Плавнів, Гадяча, Диканьки, Козельщини та Великої Багачки. Також на зустріч завітали випускники з Харкова, Куп’янська, Черкас, Маріуполя, Ромен, Київщини та Чернігівщини.
Особливою ця зустріч стала для ініціатора події – випускника Леоніда Безкровного, ортопеда-травматолога з Маріуполя. Попри важке поранення та високу ампутацію, яких він зазнав під час повномасштабної війни, Леонід Безкровний зміг об’єднати своїх однокурсників і допомогти здійснити давню мрію – знову зібратися разом.
«Ми були молодими, мріяли, навчалися, багато працювали. Грошей часто не вистачало, але це не заважало нам радіти життю, дружити й підтримувати один одного. Найціннішим були людські стосунки», – згадує Леонід Безкровний.
А втілити задум у життя та об’єднати однокурсників допоміг доцент кафедри оториноларингології з офтальмологією ПДМУ Валерій Лобурець. Саме він зустрічав випускників біля центрального входу університету – із щирими обіймами, усмішками та словами привітання.
«Такі зустрічі нагадують нам, наскільки важливою є сила університетської спільноти. Тут у альма-матер є особлива атмосфера, той теплий клімат, який об’єднує людей і дає відчуття зв’язку поколінь. Це надихає і додає впевненості у майбутньому».
Під час урочистої частини до випускників звернувся доктор медичних наук, професор, завідувач кафедри внутрішньої медицини № 2 ПДМУ Іван Катеренчук – викладач, який свого часу навчав їх на 5-му курсі.
У своєму виступі професор порушив тему змін, які відбулися в медицині за останні 50 років. За цей час трансформувалися суспільство, підходи до лікування та організація медичної допомоги, з’явилися нові технології й можливості. Водночас він звернув увагу колег на сучасні виклики, зокрема особливості освітнього процесу в умовах війни, коли студенти й викладачі продовжують навчатися та працювати навіть під час повітряних тривог, а також наголосив на важливості якісної підготовки майбутніх лікарів і подальшого розвитку медичної освіти.
Окремо професор подякував випускникам, які своїм професійним шляхом продовжують традиції медичної школи ПМСІ – ПДМУ. На згадку про зустріч Іван Катеренчук подарував їм альманах, присвячений 50-річчю кафедри внутрішньої медицини № 2, яку він очолює вже 35 років.
Щирі слова вдячності викладачам від імені всіх випускників висловила Лариса Матюшенко (Коздоба), яка нині працює радницею Бучанського міського голови з медичних питань.
«Ми безмежно вдячні нашим викладачам за знання, підтримку й віру в нас. Саме вони навчили нас не лише лікувати, а й клінічно мислити, брати відповідальність за свої рішення та завжди пам'ятати, що в центрі медицини – людина. Серед наших однокурсників – науковці, керівники, заслужені лікарі, фахівці первинної ланки. Кожен знайшов своє покликання, але всіх нас об'єднує медична школа, яку ми пройшли тут».
Розмова про шлях випускників природно перейшла до теми майбутнього медицини та молодих людей, які сьогодні роблять свій вибір на користь професії лікаря й навчання у ПДМУ. Лариса Матюшенко поділилася думками про те, що допомагає майбутнім медикам пройти цей шлях, і чому важливо максимально використовувати можливості студентських років.
«Не варто відкладати життя на потім – потрібно жити тут і зараз та максимально використовувати можливості, які дає університет. Свого часу ми отримали не лише знання, а й незабутній досвід студентських років, спілкування, дружбу, підтримку одне одного – усе це залишилося з нами назавжди. Якщо молоді люди обирають професію медика, їм варто брати від навчання якомога більше – знання, практичні навички та досвід викладачів».
Для випускників, які отримали дипломи у 1982 році, цей день став поверненням до витоків їхньої історії в медицині. Для університету – ще одним підтвердженням того, що справжня медична школа виходить далеко за межі років навчання. Вона залишається з людиною на все життя.
На завершення випускники переглянули відео про сучасний Полтавський державний медичний університет, зробили спільне фото та домовилися про нові зустрічі. Цього дня вони знову відчули себе частиною великої університетської родини – тієї, що народилася у студентських аудиторіях, серед перших знань, дружби та мрії стати лікарем. Через десятиліття їх знову об’єднали рідні стіни, спогади та люди, з якими назавжди пов’язала професія.

Half a Century Later – Back at Their Alma Mater: PSMU Welcomes Alumni of the Medical Faculty of the Poltava Medical Stomatological Institute
Half a century ago, they crossed the threshold of the Poltava Medical Stomatological Institute as first-year students, embarking on a profession that would become their life’s calling. Over the years, the country, medicine, technologies, and approaches to healthcare have undergone profound changes. Ukraine has faced numerous challenges, and today the medical community continues its work under the conditions of a full-scale war. Yet one thing has remained unchanged: a physician’s responsibility to patients and the enduring bond with their alma mater.
On 1 August 2026, the Poltava State Medical University (PSMU) welcomed graduates of the Medical Faculty of the Poltava Medical Stomatological Institute (PMSI), who completed their studies in 1982. The reunion marked the 50th anniversary of the beginning of their academic journey, commemorating the day they first entered the institute as students.
A total of 61 alumni traveled from different regions of Ukraine to attend the event. The largest group came from the Poltava region, including Poltava, Kremenchuk, Myrhorod, Lubny, Horishni Plavni, Hadiach, Dykanka, Kozelshchyna, and Velyka Bahachka. Graduates also arrived from Kharkiv, Kupiansk, Cherkasy, Mariupol, Romny, Kyiv region, and Chernihiv region.
The reunion held special significance for its initiator, Leonid Bezkrovnyi, an orthopedic trauma surgeon from Mariupol. Despite sustaining severe injuries and a high-level amputation during the full-scale war, Leonid succeeded in bringing together his former classmates and fulfilling a long-cherished dream of reuniting them.
“We were young, full of dreams, eager to learn, and worked hard. Money was often scarce, but that never prevented us from enjoying life, building friendships, and supporting one another. Human relationships were the most valuable thing we had,” recalled Leonid Bezkrovnyi.
The reunion became possible thanks to Valerii Loburets, Associate Professor of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology with Ophthalmology at PSMU, who helped organize the event and reconnect former classmates. He personally welcomed the alumni at the University's main entrance with warm embraces, smiles, and heartfelt greetings.
“Reunions like this remind us of the strength of the university community. Our alma mater has a unique atmosphere—a warm environment that brings people together and fosters a sense of continuity between generations. It inspires us and gives us confidence in the future.”
During the official ceremony, the graduates were addressed by Professor Ivan Katerenchuk, MD, DSc, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine No. 2 at PSMU, who had taught many of them during their fifth year of study.
In his speech, Professor Katerenchuk reflected on the tremendous changes that medicine has undergone over the past fifty years. Society, medical practice, healthcare organization, technologies, and treatment approaches have all evolved significantly. At the same time, he highlighted the challenges facing medical education today, particularly conducting teaching and learning under wartime conditions, when students and faculty continue their work even during air raid alerts. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards in medical education and ensuring the continued development of future healthcare professionals.
Professor Katerenchuk also expressed his gratitude to the alumni for carrying forward the traditions of the medical school established by PMSI and continued by PSMU through their professional achievements. As a commemorative gift, he presented each participant with an almanac published in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Department of Internal Medicine No. 2, which he has led for 35 years.
On behalf of all the graduates, Larysa Matiushenko (Kozdoba), currently serving as an Advisor to the Mayor of Bucha on Healthcare, expressed heartfelt appreciation to their teachers.
“We are deeply grateful to our professors for the knowledge, encouragement, and confidence they gave us. They taught us not only how to treat patients but also how to think clinically, take responsibility for our decisions, and always remember that people are at the heart of medicine. Among our classmates are researchers, healthcare leaders, distinguished physicians, and primary care specialists. Each of us found our own professional path, but we are all united by the medical school that shaped us here.”
The conversation naturally turned from the graduates’ professional journeys to the future of medicine and the young people who are now choosing to become physicians and study at PSMU. Larysa Matiushenko shared her thoughts on what helps future doctors succeed and why students should make the most of their university years.
“Life should not be postponed—you have to live in the present and take full advantage of every opportunity the university offers. We gained not only knowledge but also unforgettable experiences, friendships, communication, and mutual support that have remained with us throughout our lives. Anyone who chooses the medical profession should absorb as much as possible during their studies—knowledge, practical skills, and the invaluable experience of their professors.”
For the graduates who received their diplomas in 1982, the reunion became a return to the beginning of their lifelong journey in medicine. For the University, it served as another reminder that a true medical school extends far beyond the years spent in lecture halls. It remains with a person for life.
The event concluded with a presentation about today's Poltava State Medical University, followed by a group photograph and plans for future reunions. For one memorable day, the graduates once again felt themselves to be part of the large university family that had first been formed in student classrooms through shared learning, friendship, and the dream of becoming physicians. Decades later, they were reunited once again by the familiar walls of their alma mater, cherished memories, and the people with whom the medical profession had forever connected their lives.
