Developing Modern Clinical Thinking and Promoting the Mental Health of Future Physicians

The Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine at Poltava State Medical University continues its active educational work with third-year students of Medical Faculty No. 1.

As part of the “Propaedeutics of Medicine” educational component, a thematic educational discussion was held focusing on current issues in psychosomatic medicine and the promotion of mental health.

The main topic of the event was a discussion of the role of Oleh Chaban, a Ukrainian psychiatrist, psychotherapist, researcher, and prominent specialist in the field of mental health, in shaping modern approaches to mental health care. The students learned about Oleh Chaban’s professional work and his approaches to overcoming the stigma associated with mental disorders and developing an integrative biopsychosocial approach in medicine.

Topics related to mental health have been incorporated into the internal medicine propaedeutics curriculum based on the key principles of the World Health Organization’s Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP). Future physicians are introduced to approaches that help primary healthcare professionals identify and provide care for major mental health conditions.

The department’s teaching staff emphasized that a modern physician should assess not only a patient’s physical condition but also understand the psychological context of illness, as physical and mental health are closely interconnected.

In the current realities of Ukraine, basic psychological support skills and knowledge of the principles of mhGAP are becoming particularly important for future healthcare professionals. Educational activities of this kind help students not only gain a deeper understanding of professional ethics but also learn to take care of their own mental health, which is an important foundation for a successful career in medicine.
