Online Meetings with Academic Advisors: PSMU First-Year Students Discuss the Specifics of University Studies
Academic advisors from the Department of Ukrainian Studies and Humanities at Poltava State Medical University (PSMU) held their first online educational and advisory meetings with first-year students from Groups 1 and 3 of the Faculty of Dentistry, who are assigned to the Department. The meetings were attended by Tetiana Leshchenko, Head of the Department, and Viktoriia Yufymenko, Senior Lecturer.
During the meetings, participants discussed first-year students’ adaptation to university life, the organization of the educational process, internal regulations, students’ rights and responsibilities, and the development of professional qualities essential for future dentists.
Particular attention was paid to the specifics of distance learning and the use of digital platforms. The academic advisors emphasized the importance of independence and responsibility when completing academic assignments, as well as adherence to the principles of academic integrity. Students were introduced to Ukrainian Law No. 4742-IX “On Academic Integrity,” which entered into force on July 31, 2026, and establishes the legal framework for ensuring academic integrity in education and science.
In view of the university’s 105th anniversary, its history and traditions were also important topics of discussion. First-year students learned about the structure and activities of student organizations and were introduced to the regulatory documents governing the educational process and university life. Special attention was also given to fostering a cohesive and supportive student group.
Academic advising involves not only providing students with information and guidance but also helping them develop their abilities and become actively involved in university life. Students have opportunities to participate in the activities of the Student Parliament, the trade union, and the Student Scientific Society; develop their creative talents in artistic groups; and improve their athletic skills by joining sports clubs. Attention to students’ living conditions is another important aspect of the interaction between academic advisors and students.
The first academic advising meetings provided an opportunity to discuss issues essential to the start of university studies and highlight the opportunities available for first-year students to participate in the life of the university community.
