PSMU Hosts National Training on Psychological Support for Veterans, Women Veterans and Their Families

From 25 to 27 August 2026, Poltava State Medical University is hosting an in-person training course, “Fundamentals of Psychological Support for Veterans, Women Veterans and Their Families.” The training is being held at the initiative of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in cooperation with the State Institution “Lisova Polyana” Center for Mental Health and Veteran Rehabilitation of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, as part of the Ukrainian Rapid Response Fund program implemented by IREX with the support of the U.S. Department of State.

PSMU is one of five venues in Ukraine hosting in-person training sessions under this program. Following the online stage, 350 professionals were selected from more than 500 participants to take part in face-to-face training in Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Poltava, Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk. In Poltava, the training brought together 22 participants, including clinical psychologists, physician-psychologists, psychotherapists and psychiatrists from Poltava, Lubny, Kremenchuk, Lokhvytsia, Hadiach and Myrhorod, as well as Kharkiv, Izium, Rubizhne, Cherkasy and Merefa. Representatives of PSMU also joined the training: Vadym Rud, Head of the Mental Health Center of the University Clinic of PSMU and Associate Professor of the Department of Psychiatry, Narcology and Medical Psychology, and Viktor Lebediev, Chair of the PSMU Veterans’ Council and psychologist at Municipal Enterprise “Second City Clinical Hospital of Poltava City Council.”

The program’s team of trainers includes six specialists from the Lisova Polyana Center. In Poltava, the in-person training is delivered by two of them — Senior Clinical Psychologist Kateryna Urus and Clinical Psychologist and Trainer Olena Frolenkova. The program was developed based on the Center’s experience of working with military personnel and veterans, which its specialists have been accumulating since 2015.

“Working with veterans and their family members has its own specific features and represents an important challenge for mental health professionals. That is why, within the program, we combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills, drawing on many years of clinical and practical experience,” said Kateryna Urus, Senior Clinical Psychologist at the State Institution “Lisova Polyana” Center for Mental Health and Veteran Rehabilitation of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Clinical psychologist and trainer at the Lisova Polyana Center Olena Frolenkova spoke about the content of the program and current approaches to working with veterans and their families:

“The program covers topics that are highly relevant to mental health professionals: working with people who have experienced trauma and torture, supporting veterans after amputations, providing assistance to their family members, and working with PTSD. We also focus specifically on supporting families experiencing ambiguous loss due to a loved one going missing, as well as on the specific features of working with veterans in the Ukrainian context, where the war is ongoing.”

Vadym Rud emphasized the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to providing assistance to veterans:

“There must be a strong partnership between a psychologist, a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist. When this is lacking, the effectiveness of assistance is unfortunately very low. For me, it is important to hear the voices of psychologists and emphasize that we need to work as a team. This is what is called a multidisciplinary approach.”

Vadym Rud also highlighted the value of this training for young specialists who are only beginning their practical careers. According to him, the training provides an opportunity to acquire new knowledge and practical tools while also re-evaluating one’s own professional experience.

The participants of the training at PSMU were also offered a guided tour of the National Museum of the University’s History. Museum Director Tamila Dashevska introduced the guests to the history of the university and the development of medical education in the Poltava region in an interactive format.

Hosting this national training at PSMU promotes professional exchange among specialists from different regions of Ukraine and facilitates the dissemination of practical experience in working with veterans and their families. At the same time, the university’s participation in such educational initiatives strengthens its role in developing a modern mental health system and in professionally training specialists who work with the consequences of war.
