Life-Saving Practical Skills: Mini-Workshops by the Department of Internal Medicine No. 3 with Phthisiology
Over the course of a week, academic staff members of the Department of Internal Medicine No. 3 with Phthisiology at Poltava State Medical University (PSMU)—Associate Professors Nataliia Dihtiar, Anna Lavrenko, and Nataliia Herasymenko, and Assistant Lecturers Yanina Avramenko, Oksana Bielan, and Maryna Kulish—conducted a series of mini-workshops for interested students enrolled in the **Dentistry** and Medical Psychology educational and professional programs. The workshops focused on providing assistance in emergency situations under wartime conditions.
In the context of russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the ability to promptly recognize life-threatening conditions, rapidly assess a situation, and provide first aid and emergency medical care has become particularly important. These skills are essential not only for healthcare professionals but also for ordinary citizens who may find themselves near people injured by shelling, explosions, traumatic incidents, or other emergencies.
During the practical sessions, participants had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of emergency response protocols, improve their skills in the initial assessment of an injured person’s condition, learn to prioritize medical assistance, and respond promptly to critical changes in vital signs. Particular emphasis was placed on the practical nature of the training, practicing the correct sequence of actions, and developing the confidence needed to act effectively under time constraints and heightened psychological stress.
For future dentists, these skills are an essential component of patient safety during dental appointments, as medical emergencies can arise directly during dental procedures. For students specializing in Medical Psychology, particular importance is attached to the ability to recognize signs of acute physical health disorders, act within the scope of their professional competence, and interact effectively with other specialists in crisis situations.
Conducting these mini-workshops represents an important step in preparing future healthcare professionals for their careers amid contemporary challenges. Today, professional competence involves not only sound theoretical knowledge but also the practical readiness to act quickly, efficiently, and responsibly when human lives depend on the decisions made.
The Department of Internal Medicine No. 3 with Phthisiology at PSMU continues to promote practice-oriented education aimed at developing the competencies that future healthcare professionals need to work effectively under wartime conditions.
