PSMU Discusses the Feast of the Intercession through the Lens of Ukrainian Traditions and History
On 1 October 2026, the Department of Surgery No. 1 of PSMU held an educational session entitled “The Intercession: When Autumn Meets History” for sixth-year students of Group 2 of Medical Faculty No. 2. The session was conducted by Tamara Horodova-Andrieieva, Assistant Professor of the Department.
The educational session took place at the Sorochyn Yar complex in the village of Kamianka, Poltava District. During the event, students discussed the traditions associated with the Feast of the Intercession of the Holy Theotokos (Pokrova) and its place in Ukrainian history and culture.
The participants recalled the traditional significance of Pokrova in the lives of Ukrainians: the completion of fieldwork, preparation of households for winter, and the beginning of the autumn-winter season of traditional evening gatherings and weddings. Particular attention was paid to the significance of Pokrova for the Zaporizhian Cossacks, for whom it was one of the major holidays. In Cossack tradition, Pokrova became a symbol of protection and military honour, bringing together Christian traditions and ideas of protection and military service.
The historical theme was connected with the present day. The participants discussed 1 October as the Day of Defenders and Defenders of Ukraine and the importance of defending the state amid the full-scale war. They also considered how traditions and historical memory can help us understand contemporary events.
The educational session gave students an opportunity to explore Ukrainian cultural heritage, recall the historical significance of Pokrova, and reflect on the continuity between generations, responsibility, and the value of protecting one’s country. In today’s circumstances, these historical traditions acquire particular significance.
We express our gratitude to the defenders of Ukraine for the opportunity to study and work.
