The Intellectual Elite Comes Together in Times of Trial: PSMU Commemorates the 90th Anniversary of Ivan Drach’s Birth

The Department of Ukrainian Studies and Humanities at Poltava State Medical University (PSMU), headed by Associate Professor Tetiana Leshchenko, held an information session for first-year students enrolled in the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy educational and professional programme to mark the 90th anniversary of Ivan Drach’s birth. A Ukrainian poet of the Sixtiers generation, screenwriter, and the first head of the People’s Movement of Ukraine (Rukh), Ivan Drach was born on 17 October 1936. During the event, participants discussed his creative legacy and its significance in the context of contemporary challenges.

The event’s organizer, Senior Lecturer Viktoriia Yufymenko, emphasized that today’s medical students represent Ukraine’s future intellectual elite, whose role extends beyond safeguarding public health to shaping the future of the state. Ivan Drach’s example, combining literary creativity with civic and political engagement, encourages reflection on the intellectual community’s responsibility for society, national consciousness, and the destiny of the country. The medical profession, too, entails a commitment to serving people, especially in times of severe trials.

A particularly meaningful part of the session focused on the poet’s family. Participants were reminded that the artist’s son, Maksym Drach, also chose the noble profession of medicine. He successfully graduated from a medical institute, earned his medical degree, and later demonstrated remarkable heroism by taking part in the clean-up operations following the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster. During the early years of Ukraine’s independence, Maksym Drach headed the Department of External Relations at the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. His life choices demonstrate that the commitment to serving people and the state was a defining value shared by the entire Drach family.

Ivan Drach’s life and work remain closely connected to the present, as his poetry and political engagement consistently sought to awaken national consciousness and advance Ukraine’s sovereignty. Today, amid the full-scale war, his poems resonate with renewed, almost prophetic force, calling on Ukrainians to cherish their national identity and work every day for the country’s future.

The experience of the Sixtiers generation reminds young people that true intellectual leadership is defined not only by knowledge and professional achievements but also by the willingness to assume responsibility for society and the future of Ukraine.
