Hippotherapy and Adaptive Archery: PSMU Broadens the Practical Perspective on Rehabilitation
On 23 October 2026, as part of Occupational Therapy Week and the practical component of the All-Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Conference with International Participation, “Current Issues in Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy: Evidence-Based Practice, Innovative and Interdisciplinary Approaches to Rehabilitation,” dedicated to the 105th anniversary of Poltava State Medical University (PSMU), a master class was held at the Ecolife Health Horse Riding and Ecotourism Centre, a non-governmental organization located in the village of Laburivka.
The event brought together staff members of the Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine of PSMU, students enrolled in the Therapy and Rehabilitation specialty, students of the Medicine educational and professional program, and medical interns interested in modern approaches to rehabilitation.
The event was also attended by Professor Davyd Avetikov, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of PSMU, Doctor of Medical Sciences; Professor Valerii Zhamardii, Dean of Medical Faculty No. 2, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences; and Alona Hryhorenko, Deputy Dean of Medical Faculty No. 2, PhD.
As part of the master class entitled “Adaptive Horse Riding (Hippotherapy) and Recreational Archery in Rehabilitation,” participants learned about the use of adaptive horse riding in the rehabilitation process, the principles of interacting with horses, and the potential of recreational archery as an adaptive activity.
The practical session was led by specialists from the Ecolife Centre: Tetiana Hekova-Holovchenko, the Centre’s founder, a hippotherapy specialist and crisis psychologist, and Anatolii Holovchenko, the Centre’s co-founder and a combat veteran.
The participants had the opportunity not only to learn more about these rehabilitation approaches but also to observe how sessions are organized and try selected activities themselves. The event provided a practical complement to the conference, demonstrating how adaptive horse riding and recreational archery can be incorporated into rehabilitation to support recovery, adaptation, and engagement in an active life.
