On 27 October, International Occupational Therapy Day, the Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine at Poltava State Medical University (PSMU) hosted a workshop entitled “The Use of Human–Animal Interaction in the Work of a Therapeutic Team” as part of Occupational Therapy Week. The event was attended by students enrolled in Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy educational programs.

The workshop was led by Elvira Popova, Head of the NGO Canis Club Centre for Gentle Dog Training, a canine-assisted therapy specialist, crisis psychologist and dog trainer.

The meeting was also attended by Zhanna Kundii, PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, Director of the Medical Education and Research Institute, and Associate Professor Viktoriia Donchenko, PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, Deputy Director.

Participants explored the potential of canine-assisted therapy in rehabilitation, the specific aspects of involving specially trained dogs in therapeutic activities, and the importance of human–animal interaction for a person's emotional well-being, communication and motivation.

The practical part of the workshop featured Dori and Lilu, therapy dogs. Through working with the dogs, participants learned about the specifics of human–animal interaction and the principles of safely involving dogs in the therapeutic process. Particular attention was paid to the role of the specialist and the possibilities of incorporating elements of canine-assisted therapy into the work of a therapeutic team.

The workshop enabled future physical therapists and occupational therapists to broaden their knowledge of modern rehabilitation approaches and explore the practical application of canine-assisted therapy. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss prospects for further cooperation and the implementation of joint initiatives as part of the research activities of the Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine.
