On 4 November 2026, Poltava State Medical University hosted a career guidance meeting with representatives of the Special Purpose Police Department, the “Liut” (Fury) United Assault Brigade of the National Police of Ukraine. The meeting brought together PSMU students and academic staff to introduce them to the unit’s activities and explore professional opportunities for medical specialists within the National Police of Ukraine.
The university welcomed representatives of the “Shield of Life” Pre-Hospital Care Unit, including Nataliia Babenko, Head of the Medical Department of the “Liut” Brigade. Joining the meeting online from the Donetsk operational area was Yevheniia Hrytsenko, an anaesthesiologist and PSMU graduate who is currently serving and providing medical care in wartime conditions. Prior to her service, she worked at the I. I. Mechnikov Dnipropetrovsk Regional Clinical Hospital.
Welcoming the guests, Professor Valerii Pokhylko, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Extracurricular Activities at PSMU, thanked the brigade representatives for their vital life-saving mission and emphasised the importance of such meetings for the professional training of future healthcare professionals.
The guests spoke about the history of the “Liut” Brigade, its main areas of activity, and the establishment of the “Shield of Life” Medical Service. Nataliia Babenko introduced the participants to the organisation of the medical unit, its staffing and logistical resources, medical equipment, and the specific aspects of the specialists’ professional duties.
A particularly important part of the meeting was a live video link with Yevheniia Hrytsenko from the Donetsk operational area. It offered PSMU students a unique opportunity to hear first-hand from a university graduate about the work of an anaesthesiologist in a combat zone, the professional challenges involved, and the responsibility shouldered by medical personnel who work every day to save the lives of the wounded.
Yevheniia shared her professional experience and spoke about complex clinical cases, the specific challenges of providing care to patients with blast and mine-related injuries, the intensive pace of surgical work, and the importance of teamwork in saving wounded personnel. She also addressed the professional and personal challenges faced by medical staff during their service, arrangements for rest between operations, and social support.
The students listened attentively, actively engaged in the discussion, and asked numerous questions. In particular, Aya Boustangi, Head of the PSMU “Unity” Volunteer Group, asked what had motivated Yevheniia to join the medical unit, how she had arrived at that decision, and what difficulties she had encountered along the way. Other participants raised questions concerning psychological support for medical personnel, the preservation of their mental well-being, and the organisation of medical care in combat conditions.
The meeting was attended by students from Medical Faculties No. 1 and No. 2, the Dental Faculty, and the PSMU College of Medicine and Pharmacy.
