Language as a Marker of National Identity: PSMU First-Year Students Explore the Origins of the Ukrainian Language

To mark the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, the Department of Ukrainian Studies and Humanities at Poltava State Medical University (PSMU), headed by Associate Professor Tetiana Leshchenko, held an online session entitled “The Genesis of the Ukrainian National Language” for first-year students enrolled in the Pharmacy educational and professional program. The session was part of the elective course “Ukrainian Studies” and focused on the history of the formation and development of the Ukrainian language.

During the session, Viktoriia Yufymenko, Senior Lecturer at the department, and the students explored the main stages in the development of the Ukrainian language, its historical roots, and the continuity of its linguistic tradition. Particular attention was paid to language as a kind of genetic code of a nation, preserving historical memory, reflecting cultural traditions, and serving as an important factor in national identity.

In the face of the challenges Ukraine is experiencing today, knowledge of the history of one's native language takes on particular significance. Understanding its origins helps deepen awareness of the connection between language, national identity, cultural heritage, and civic consciousness.

For future pharmacists, it is important to understand the significance of the Ukrainian language not only as an integral part of national culture but also as a means of professional communication. Its use in professional and everyday interactions contributes to the development and wider use of the Ukrainian language.

The session combined the study of Ukrainian language history with reflection on its role in society. Exploring this topic helps foster a responsible attitude towards national cultural heritage and a deeper understanding of the importance of language in preserving a people's unique identity.
