PSMU Department of Internal Medicine No. 3 with Phthisiology Discusses Academic Integrity and the Responsible Use of AI

On 23 October 2026, the Department of Internal Medicine No. 3 with Phthisiology at Poltava State Medical University (PSMU) held a discussion on academic integrity and the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. The discussion was attended by Acting Head of the Department N. Dihtiar; Associate Professors A. Lavrenko, N. Herasymenko, and A. Vorodiukhina; and Teaching Assistants O. Bielan, M. Kulish, Y. Avramenko, and Y. Rybаlchenko. These issues were also addressed during educational sessions with fifth-year students of Group 4 of the Faculty of Dentistry and fourth-year students of Group 6 of the Medical Faculty.

Academic integrity is an essential component of high-quality medical education, as the knowledge, competence, and responsibility of future doctors directly affect people's lives and health. Adherence to the principles of honesty, independent work, and respect for intellectual property helps foster professional ethics.

Artificial intelligence is a useful learning tool that can help students find and organize information, explain complex medical concepts, and prepare for classes. However, its use must be responsible and transparent.

During the discussion, participants emphasized the need to critically evaluate AI-generated information, verify its accuracy, provide proper references, and prevent academic plagiarism. Particular attention was given to the fact that AI cannot replace the knowledge, critical thinking, and professional judgement of future doctors. Protecting patients' personal data also remains essential.

Students were introduced to the provisions of the Law of Ukraine “On Academic Integrity” dated 18 December 2025, No. 4742-IX, which comprehensively regulates academic integrity in Ukraine.

The discussion aimed to deepen students' understanding of the principles of academic integrity and the responsible use of modern technologies in their studies and future professional practice.
