PSMU Researchers Present Their Research Findings at International Scientific Events in Brussels

On 29–31 October 2026, two international scientific events took place in Brussels, Kingdom of Belgium: the seminar “Gastrointestinal Infectious Diseases” and the symposium “Contemporary Approaches to the Management of Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Between Clinical Guidelines and the Art of Treatment.”

The events brought together Professor Ihor Skrypnyk, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Postgraduate Education, Professor at the Department of Internal Medicine No. 1 and President of the Ukrainian Gastroenterological Association, and Hanna Maslova, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine No. 1 and Secretary of the Ukrainian Gastroenterological Association. The PSMU researchers presented three poster presentations featuring the findings of their own research.

The research focused on the analysis of screening and diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection in Ukraine under martial law, as well as the use of cytoprotective therapy and food for special medical purposes to optimise the management of patients with ulcerative colitis.

The two scientific sessions of the seminar on gastrointestinal infectious diseases addressed the role of faecal microbiota transplantation in patients with Clostridioides difficile infection, specific considerations in preparing patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) for immunosuppressive therapy, and treatment strategies for fungal infections in patients with liver cirrhosis and those who have undergone transplantation.

Of particular interest was a lecture delivered by Harry Sokol (Paris, France) as part of the master-class “The Gut Microbiome in Gastrointestinal Infectious Diseases.”

Over the two days of the symposium, eight scientific sessions and panel discussions were held, focusing on current issues in the management of patients with IBD. Participants discussed modern diagnostic methods for these conditions, including capsule endoscopy; first-line treatment options and dietary therapy for Crohn’s disease; strategies for managing refractory forms of the disease; extraintestinal manifestations; perianal lesions; and the risk of malignancy associated with IBD.

The events were organised by the Herbert Falk Foundation, which brought together leading international experts in gastroenterology and inflammatory bowel disease research, including J. Lindsay (United Kingdom), M. Long (USA), B. Siegmund (Germany), and others.

The comprehensive scientific programme, participation of leading international experts, and professional discussions on current approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of IBD provided an important platform for the exchange of experience and the exploration of future directions in gastroenterology.
