On 19 October, Ukrainian National Responsibility Day, academic staff of the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine at Poltava State Medical University (PSMU) organized an educational event for third-year students of Group 11 of the Faculty of Medicine.

Ukrainian National Responsibility Day is observed on the birthday of Bohdan Hawrylyshyn, an outstanding Ukrainian scholar, thinker, and philanthropist who authored the Declaration of Human Responsibility. This document reminds everyone of their personal responsibility towards their family, their country, and their chosen profession.

As part of the national and patriotic education programme, future physicians, accompanied by Associate Professor Zinaida Borysova, met with Archpriest Serhii Sushchenko, a medical chaplain at the VETERAN Centre of the M. V. Sklifosovskyi Poltava Regional Clinical Hospital, a municipal enterprise of the Poltava Regional Council. The event took place at the Department’s clinical training base under the supervision of Professor Yurii Kazakov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Head of the Department, and Associate Professor Viktor Boriak, PhD in Medical Sciences and responsible for educational activities.

The event aimed to foster civic awareness, professional ethical conduct, and empathy among future physicians. Particular attention was paid to the principles of bioethics when working with war veterans, wounded Ukrainian defenders, and their family members. Participants discussed communication strategies and psychological support for people who have experienced combat-related trauma, as well as the role of chaplaincy services in the healthcare system and in medical and psychological rehabilitation.

For students beginning their clinical placements in internal medicine departments, the meeting provided an opportunity to deepen their understanding of ethical communication with patients who have combat experience. Through the example of the VETERAN Centre, participants learned about contemporary approaches to comprehensive rehabilitation that combine medical care with psychosocial support.

Archpriest Serhii Sushchenko shared his experience of day-to-day practice, emphasized the importance of an individualized approach to every person, and offered professional guidance to the participants. At the end of the meeting, academic staff and students thanked the specialist for the opportunity to learn about the specific aspects of the psychosocial rehabilitation of military personnel and took a group photo to commemorate the occasion.
