Nordic Walking in Rehabilitation: Practical Session at PSMU as Part of Occupational Therapy Week

On 26 October 2026, a practical session on Nordic walking was held as part of Occupational Therapy Week. The session was organized by the Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine at Poltava State Medical University (PSMU) in cooperation with its partner, the Second City Clinical Hospital of the Poltava City Council. The event brought together students enrolled in Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy programs, as well as the department’s academic staff.

The session was led by Serhii Posternak, a physician specializing in physical and rehabilitation medicine at the Second City Clinical Hospital of the Poltava City Council and a Nordic walking instructor.

During the session, students learned the fundamentals of Nordic walking technique, the proper use of poles, and the principles of safe physical activity. The poles used for practical training were provided by the municipal institution “Poltava City Centre for Physical Health of the Population ‘Sport for All’”.

During the practical component, participants practiced the key elements of Nordic walking technique and learned about the specific characteristics of this form of physical exercise.

Nordic walking engages various muscle groups, helps improve endurance and movement coordination, and can be incorporated into physical therapy, rehabilitation, and health promotion programs.

The session gave future physical therapists and occupational therapists an opportunity to broaden their understanding of approaches to maintaining physical activity and promoting functional independence.
