“Modern Endoscopic Technologies in Otorhinolaryngology”: PSMU Opens National Scientific and Practical Conference
On 6 November 2026, the National Scientific and Practical Conference “Modern Endoscopic Technologies in Otorhinolaryngology”, dedicated to the 105th anniversary of Poltava State Medical University, opened at the Mykola Gogol Poltava Academic Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre.
The scientific event brought together specialists from various cities across Ukraine, including Kyiv, Lviv, Ternopil, Dnipro, Odesa, Cherkasy, Kharkiv, Sumy and Poltava. The conference focuses on the latest advances in endoscopic diagnostics and surgical treatment, current scientific research, the exchange of clinical experience, and prospects for the development of otorhinolaryngology.
The conference opened with a minute of silence in memory of Ukraine’s fallen defenders, followed by the National Anthem of Ukraine.
Welcome addresses were delivered by representatives of the regional and municipal authorities, as well as heads of healthcare institutions. Among them were Yevhenii Skyba, Deputy Head of the Poltava Regional Military Administration for Digital Development, Digital Transformation and Digitalisation; Oleksandr Lemeshko, First Deputy Head of the Poltava Regional Council; Oleh Didenko, Head of the Standing Committee on Education, Science and Culture of the Poltava Regional Council; Kateryna Yamshchykova, Secretary of the Poltava City Council; and Hryhorii Oksak, Chief Medical Officer of the M. V. Sklifosovskyi Poltava Regional Clinical Hospital.
In their addresses, the guests emphasised PSMU’s role in the development of medical education and science, acknowledged the professional achievements of Poltava’s otorhinolaryngologists, and highlighted their work amid the challenges of wartime. Particular attention was drawn to the importance of scientific developments and specialised otorhinolaryngological care in the treatment of combat-related injuries, as well as the experience gained by Poltava healthcare professionals, which has attracted interest from international colleagues. The participants were wished a productive conference, fruitful professional discussions and new achievements aimed at improving the quality and safety of medical care.
The participants were also addressed by Professor Viacheslav Zhdan, Chair of the PSMU Academic Council. In his speech, he focused on the vocation of a physician, the combination of professional excellence and humanity, and the responsibility of the medical community to society.
“There is a wise saying that most professions in the world were created by people, while only three come from God – those of a physician, a teacher and a lawyer. A physician is a person who uniquely combines outstanding professional abilities, profound humanity and genuine selflessness.
I sincerely wish all participants of today’s conference the opportunity to deepen their knowledge, master modern techniques, apply existing scientific achievements and discover new prospects. I would also like to acknowledge the significant work being continued today by the Head of the Department, Mykhailo Bezega, and pay tribute to the memory of the outstanding scholar and long-serving Head of the Department, Professor Serhii Bezshapochnyi, who laid the solid scientific foundations of the Poltava School of Otorhinolaryngology.
The University Academic Council will continue to make every effort to ensure that Poltava State Medical University maintains a high standard of professional and scientific activity. Most importantly, may everyone remain safe and healthy – something made possible only thanks to our young men and women who are defending Ukraine today, weapons in hand.”
The practical component of the conference and its programme were presented by Associate Professor Mykhailo Bezega, Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology with Ophthalmology at PSMU. He thanked his colleagues for their active participation and announced that, following an intensive theoretical programme, participants would have the opportunity to attend a live surgery session: real-time broadcasts of six surgical procedures, with opportunities for direct interaction and discussion with the operating surgeons.
During the plenary session, specialists were presented with awards in recognition of their professionalism, significant contributions to the development of the field and in celebration of the University’s 105th anniversary.
