PSMU Students Explore the History of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra During a Thematic Meeting
On 3 November 2026, first-year students of Poltava State Medical University, accompanied by Viktoriia Yufymenko, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Ukrainian Studies and Humanities, visited the Holy Protection Church in Poltava. The meeting with the church rector, Archpriest Mykolai Khrapach, was held as part of a series of events marking the 975th anniversary of the founding of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
The participants were given a guided tour of the church, followed by a lecture delivered by Father Mykolai on the history of one of Ukraine’s oldest spiritual landmarks. He spoke about the founding of the Cave Monastery, associated with the names of Saints Anthony and Theodosius of the Caves; the development of the Lavra as a center of spiritual, cultural and educational life; the history of printing; its architectural heritage; and some of the more challenging chapters in its history.
The meeting also addressed the importance of preserving historical and cultural heritage and the role of spiritual values in human life. At the end of the event, students shared their impressions. In particular, Nina Zolotarenko noted that she had learned a great deal of new information about the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and that Father Mykolai’s account had inspired her to consider visiting this historic spiritual site.
The event was organized by the Department of Ukrainian Studies and Humanities at PSMU, headed by Tetiana Leshchenko, in cooperation with the Department for the Management of Educational, Upbringing and Youth Humanities Activities.
Such meetings complement the educational process, helping students gain a deeper understanding of Ukraine’s history and cultural heritage while fostering respect for spiritual and moral values. For future physicians, they also provide an opportunity to reflect on the importance of humanity, compassion and responsibility – qualities essential not only in professional practice but also in their interactions with people.
